Bengaluru City Civil Court

Previously, Bengaluru’s courts resembled those in other districts of Karnataka, comprising Munsiff Courts, Civil Judge’s Courts, and District Courts. The city’s rapid growth led to a surge in litigation, rendering additional courts ineffective. Recognizing the need for specialized City Civil Courts akin to those in Bombay and Ahmadabad, the High Court proposed establishing one in Bengaluru after studying similar systems elsewhere.

The Bengaluru City Civil Court Act, of 1979, was enacted, leading to its establishment. Sri P. A. Kulkarni became the first Prl. City Civil and Sessions Judge, later elevated to the Karnataka High Court.

Initially, there were 31,772 pending cases, with one Prl. City Civil and Sessions Judge and 18 Addl. Judges appointed. Currently, 95 City Civil and Sessions Courts operate due to increased caseloads, necessitating additional courts and staff.
